World Water Day 2018: The Answer is in Nature

Every drop of water is on an endless journey through the sky, the soil and streams…through our lives…and back into nature.

Can you imagine not using any water for a day?  It’s almost impossible, and certainly not comfortable.

Almost all man-made objects require the use of water at some point during their manufacture. There is so much water in our everyday lives; it’s very easy to just take it for granted. It is usually only once rains stop and fresh water supplies dry up or are polluted that we remember we can’t afford to use water without thinking about how to ensure clean supplies for the future.

The water crisis affects the poorest most – from slums to remote rural communities, refugee camps and disaster-prone communities, and particularly those marginalized by income, gender, caste, age or disability. As a result, the poorest live and die in conditions unthinkable to us in the developed world, unseen and unheard.

So let us think about how to share this precious resource fairly and sustainably! There is enough water for all of us, but sometimes good planning is needed to make sure it’s available where it’s most needed.

World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. The theme for World Water Day 2018 is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.

Nature-Based Solutions and similar approaches provide some of the most potent ways to manage the world’s water challenges in the face of climate change and finite water resources.

Wherever you are and whatever you do on March 22, make it about nature and water.

Let us celebrate water, appreciate water and raise awareness on water conservation.

Everyone counts to make every drop count!
